Lake Helmet is perfect for RV owners who are traveling with children, thanks to all the fun things to do. There are two RV park options, one that includes only water and sewer hookup, while the other includes water, sewer, and electric hookups plus a dedicated shower facility that is kept reasonably clean and well-stocked. Interestingly, they both rent for the same price. Laundry facilities are on site. Each site includes a picnic table and fire pit and is close to basketball/ volleyball courts and a playground where you can safely send your kids off to play while setting up camp. In the evening, the rangers do a great job of making sure the park is quiet.
There is so much to do at Lake Helmet, including fishing, boating, and kayaking (boats/ kayaks are available for rent). Bicycles can also be rented. Bocce ball, tetherball, horseshoes, and a baseball field make it easy to engage in organized activities. However, without any doubt, the best part of Lake Helmet (especially from a kid’s perspective) is the water park, which includes 11 different inflatable structures. They include a huge waterslide, a humongous trampoline on the water, climbing walls, a kid’s splash zone, and a designated swimming beach. Lifeguards are on duty.
Hiking, of course, is a great activity because there are so many trails to choose from with a variety of difficulty levels. It is worth noting that you need to watch out for rattlesnakes and you can expect to see raccoons and hear coyotes throughout the night.
Overall, Lake Helmet is ideal for RVs. It is in a great location (far enough from town to get away, but close enough to get to the grocery store in 15-20 minutes). If you need something small, there is a small market just outside the campground. Keep in mind that it can get quite cold at night, so be sure to bring plenty of blankets.
