An RV can make any environment feel more like a home base. The definition of a digital nomad is a person who makes their living on the internet and who has no established physical home. There are quite a few benefits in living as a digital nomad but there are drawbacks as well.
Advantages of the digital nomad lifestyle
You are not bound to the pressures of modern society unless you want to be. It’s not a nine to five job, but it can be if you prefer. You set your own work schedule which means that you can work at midnight if you like the structure. There is no need for travel to and from a job and you are working for yourself instead of a corporation or factory.
One of the greatest benefits of being a digital nomad is that you can work from nearly any location in the world that is connected to the internet. I do it by living in an RV. Moving from place to place in an RV gives you have the freedom to move around without job interference and to return to a familiar setting. This life offers an excellent opportunity to see more of the country, become accustomed to different areas.
As a digital nomad, you have the chance to forge new relationships with people from diverse backgrounds. Many friendships that are made last for years. This is a gratifying social experience that can change your life for the better. In addition to gaining friends, it’s a great way to establish new business contacts. You may find that this lifestyle opens up new vistas for lucrative and exciting business ventures.
Drawbacks to being a digital nomad
The major drawback to being a digital nomad is that it is difficult to sustain a romantic life and raise a family so it is a better option if you prefer to stay single without kids or if your partner is another nomad. However, there are exceptions. I’ve seen families and many couples on the road.
The digital nomad lifestyle can get lonely because you never stay in one place for very long. It can take a while to establish new friendships and get to know the locals. This is especially true if you have a busy work schedule that keeps you tied to your laptop. The lack of a permanent residence can be a drawback because you never really feel at home anywhere that you travel. This is what makes an RV such a good choice. It gives you a constant familiar landing place.
If you have a medical emergency or if your RV breaks down, you only have yourself to rely upon. Your friends and family are likely to be quite a distance away so your support will probably be limited to the telephone or internet for contact. However, you make your own rules. You can be a nomad who regularly returns home, even have a temporary home base. I myself have a place I rent for my RV in Los Angeles where my friends are, so I can be in the city at any time. Other times I am somewhere else with my tribe or even out of the country, spending time with my family overseas. I can always stop and stay as long as I please. I really don’t feel lonely because whenever I need company I can always find it. Actually, I believe people living the “normal” 9-5 jobs can feel even more lonely.
How to stay sane as a digital nomad
Maintaining good physical health and emotional balance are important aspects of this lifestyle that will need your attention.
Establish your own personal wellness plan in advance. You can do this by maintaining a constant circle of friends, family, and acquaintances for support. Keep in contact with your support circle. You can also boost your mental state by volunteering for worthwhile causes. You’ll meet like-minded people and feel that you are contributing to the good of all. Make realistic goals and meet them. This will help you to have a sense of fulfillment.
If travel fatigue is becoming an issue, try staying just a little longer in each place. While you’re there find activities that you enjoy such as exploration, hiking, enjoying a sport, or some other type of physical workout. Staying fit can help keep your internal chemistry working its best and can be helpful in warding off the blues.
Final thoughts
The life of a digital nomad offers a lot of freedom and independence if you like to travel and have personal space. Doing so in an RV gives you a slight edge with more of the comforts of a home. The journey offers a time for tremendous self-growth, but it can get lonely until you find your own friends and support system. Whether or not the rewards outweigh the benefits is a personal decision.
