Palomar Mountain Campground is better for tent campers or smaller RVs. The road driving up to the camp is winding and narrow. The whole mountain itself is a beautiful, forested area with many hiking trails, a fishing pond, and a nearby observatory. The observatory is free to visit and they have guided tours.
There are bathrooms and coin showers. They are old but clean enough. The park has no dump-sites. Most sites are small, I had a bit of hard time parking right in my spot with my van. The sites are shady, I had a problem keeping my battery charged with my solar panels, I had to turn on the generator for an hour or two each day.
Most sites are small, I had a bit of hard time parking right in my spot with my van, it is really not suitable for larger RVs. There are no hook-ups.
There are benches and fire rings by each site, you can buy wood at the office for $6. If you bring your wood from elsewhere, note that they don’t allow oak wood for the fire. The sites are big enough to have a few tents up. I was there at the end of April and it was cold! It got to the 30’s at night and I had to wear boots during the day.
