Since COVID Americans spent over $31 billion on camping equipment, parks, and recreations including RVs, according to data from the Outdoor Industry Association. However, there is a growing concern about security in State Parks and campgrounds. As a solo female RVer safety is always my concern. I always try to use common sense and don’t attract too much attention when I am traveling alone. I always try to stay close to some neighbors and I have installed some safety devices.

Most of the RV crimes are theft, generators, bicycles, and camping equipment are not safe unless you tie them down or lock them for the night. Violent crimes on campgrounds are generally rare. One source puts the odds of falling victim to a violent crime at the campground at one in 25,000. But you should never leave your RV’s safety to chance.

Having an RV security system is a must for anyone who wants to feel safe while traveling in their RV or camper. It can be much more difficult to secure your home on wheels than a stationary home, but the trick is to focus on the basics and add in a few additional details that will make your RV virtually impenetrable.

Many people who travel in their RV are often aware of the dangers of RV travel and they take precautions to keep themselves safe wherever they go. But the reality is that RVs can be targeted for theft and vandalism.

With more opportunities for thieves and vandals to come in contact with your RV, it is important to outsmart them and always be one step ahead. One way to do this is to set up the best RV security system that will protect you and give you peace of mind.

Burglar Alarms for RV

There are many things you can do to keep your RV safe from theft, such as locking all the doors and windows, parking in well-lit areas with high traffic, and removing any valuables from sight. But with thieves becoming more ingenious and sophisticated, you need layers of security for your RV—starting with a burglar alarm.

The problem is that many RVs are not equipped with burglar alarms. A burglar alarm would allow the RV owner to feel safe and comfortable when they leave their RV unattended.

By installing a burglar alarm in your RV, you will be alerted when there is an intruder. Burglar alarms for RVs can be mounted on the exterior or interior of the vehicle to help protect it against thieves and intruders.

But what kind of burglar alarm system should you install in your RV?

KERUI Security Alarm System

Kerui Alarm Sytstem

KERUI has created a complete security system that gives you the power to safeguard your RV from all sorts of bad elements—from intruders, thieves, fires, and floods.

The KERUI wireless burglar alarm system kit comes with a weather-proof siren, window and door motion sensors, and remote control. The alarm is ear-splittingly loud. At 115 decibels, the noise is comparable to the sound of a chainsaw, a snowmobile, or a rock concert.

Since the intruder alarm is wireless, which is perfect for your RV, camper, or motorhome, it’s easy to set up. Anyone who tries to open the doors or comes close to your motion sensor will trigger the siren. If no one disarms the siren, it will keep ringing for 2 minutes before it stops. So, the crazy loud siren deters unwanted visitors and does not give them the opportunity to enter your RV.

Moreover, the RV alarm uses a remote control for arming and disarming. It also has a panic button, which means you can sound the alarm manually using the remote control if you need emergency services.

One of the strong points of this burglar alarm system is that it can be used in conjunction with an off-site alarm monitoring service and can also be integrated with existing security cameras and other security devices, such as surveillance cameras, motion sensors, or panic buttons. In fact, the siren host can support up to 30 wireless sensors, 8 remote controls, and 10 wireless doorbell buttons. The installation is easy and straightforward, so you can DIY.

This is the system I have installed. I installed it inside and also used the door/window sensors for my storage doors. I like it because it was easy to install and you can add as many sensors to it as you need.

The 120dB siren is just loud enough to alert you or your neighbors and yet not cause a disturbance. SABRE is a well-known brand among private individuals and law enforcement agencies and has brought all of that knowledge into this system. It is a great security tool for your RV.

I used to use this for my storage doors but now I use the Kerui (above)

The Best Motorhome Security Systems

A motorhome security system is a set of mechanical and electronic devices designed to protect your RV from theft or unwanted entry. A key component of a security system is the motion sensor alarm, which detects unauthorized entry and triggers an audible or visual alarm to scare off intruders and alert you.

There are a variety of systems that allow you to monitor your vehicle from a remote location or to activate a signal that sets off an alarm that will scare away potential threats. Some options also have the ability to use GPS tracking so you can locate your vehicle if it’s ever stolen. These systems work best when paired with other security features, such as WiFi cameras and lights.

SLARR Solar Security Light

remote solar lightMany RV owners are becoming more onboard with the idea of installing a solar light on their motorhome. The light is activated by motion sensors.

SLARR’s solar outdoor solar lights provide an eco-friendly and energy-efficient way to illuminate a space outdoors and they work particularly well with motorhomes.

Why I particularly like this product is because of its remote control. You don’t always want the solar light, for example when you are in a parking lot or in a campground where it might bother others. But since you are installing it high up, it would be difficult to turn it off and on without the remote control.

As solar panels are used to generate electricity, there is no need for wiring, and because they’re designed to be weather-resistant, they’re perfect for outdoor settings.

  • The wide-angle PIR motion sensor covers a radius of 180 degrees up to 20 feet.

A wide-angle sensor will detect motion coming from all directions, The wide sensing angle fills in gaps that would otherwise go undetected. This means that the solar light sensor covers more space and provides a more complete coverage which also makes it easier to detect activities. Any approaching person will be detected and will continue to do so if they happen to change their path or position.

  • Dusk-to-Dawn Operation

The built-in light sensor triggers the light to automatically turn on at night and turn off in the early morning.

  • Large Battery Capacity with Intelligent Battery Mode.

The rechargeable battery has five times the capacity of the typical solar light available on the market. With longer battery life, your solar security led light can last long on a full charge, which enables the floodlight to continue operating even during prolonged cloud days.

  • Weatherproof

The LED lights are water-resistant and weatherproof. With an IP65 rating, the lights can endure high-pressure water jets from any angle. So, they’re protected even against hard rain.

  • Remote Control

You can easily switch between 6 operating modes through the infrared-based remote control. You can set the timer and adjust the color temperature remotely.

Wireless Video Doorbell Camera

wifi doorbell cameraYour RV security system arsenal would not be complete without a WiFi camera. This 1080p HD camera ticks all the right boxes when it comes to features. Its wide-angle lens covers a lot of ground and works perfectly with night vision.

With PIR motion detection, the video doorbell captures human activities at your front door and gives instant message alerts and live videos to your mobile device. With WiFi, you can also watch the events unfold on your smartphone. The two-way audio enables you to see, hear, and communicate with the person on the other end through the app. You can be away from your RV and still be able to monitor activities.

It works with a rechargeable battery which can last for months.

Solar Security Camera

Security Camera

This is a great security camera. The good thing is that it is wireless and powered by a solar panel which you can just attach to your RV’s roof. This means you will not have wires flying all around. Plus, it doesn’t matter if there is a power problem; your RV is still protected.

You will need to connect the camera to the internet through a wireless connection, download the app and you will be able to control the camera from your phone. An SD card can be also used but it’s a bit difficult to remove.

Features this Solar-powered Wireless Security Camera:

  • Wireless Installation & Solar 15000mAh Battery Power. Waterproof, ideal for outdoor use.
  • Instant Alerts to Phone APP & Two-way Audio
  • Infrared Night Vision

Other Safety Tips For RV Owners

The security of your RV involves more than just choosing an alarm system; it encompasses a range of measures to safeguard both the vehicle and its occupants. When parked, prioritize secure locations, such as well-lit areas with ample foot traffic and surveillance. Opt for RV parks or areas with dedicated security personnel for added protection. Before leaving your RV unattended, diligently lock all doors and windows, and invest in wheel and hitch locks to deter theft.

Traveling with personal safety in mind is equally essential. Prepare an emergency kit containing vital supplies like first aid items, non-perishable food, water, flashlights, and a portable charger. Maintain awareness of your surroundings while on the move, and exercise caution when interacting with strangers. Striking a balance between friendliness and safety is paramount.

In addition to parking and travel precautions, implement various safety measures within the RV itself. Install smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to provide early warnings of potential hazards. Keep a readily accessible fire extinguisher on board, ensuring all occupants are familiar with its location and operation in case of emergencies. These comprehensive safety measures collectively contribute to a secure and worry-free RV experience.

Prevention

Even with an alarm system or a security device in place, prevention is still a smart way to protect your RV and yourself. Basic concepts for prevention include hiding valuables, locking all doors and windows, and taking the keys with you when leaving the vehicle.

The idea is to make your RV less appealing to thieves by installing security barriers around your vehicle or trailer, such as changing the door lock and putting surveillance stickers prominently on the doors, or windows of your RV.

RV Keyless Entry Door Lock

The heavy-duty metal construction of the lock practically makes it indestructible by hand. It’s so durable that it can withstand harsh elements like rain, dust, and sand.

After installing the lock, you are able to unlock the door by using a regular key, a key fob, or a keypad. You’ll never get locked out of your RV ever again while keeping unwanted visitors away.

24-Hour Video Surveillance Warning Sticker

Warning sign sticker

Whether you actually have security cameras installed in your RV or not, you can benefit from putting up security camera warning signs. Studies suggest that security camera signage can deter burglars and thieves. It’s one of the top deterrents for burglars when choosing a home to break into.

These warning stickers are designed to attract attention by using bright colors, bold fonts, and graphics. Right off the bat, you’ll see that the print is high quality. It’s not only eye-catching, but it’s also easy to read.

The stickers are waterproof and UV-protected, so they will last a long time. Having security warning stickers on your RV reinforces whatever security measures you have in place. It’s all part of the best RV security system to protect you and your property.

Depending on your preference and budget, you can choose among many awesome mobile RV security devices and worry less again about theft. For violent crimes, you better have other types of protection.

The KERUI system is straightforward to put in in our motorhome. I mounted the motion sensor next to the outside door using the double-sided tape so it is often easily turned on when it’s gone or off when it stays and that we don’t need a motion sensor while we’re inside. I attached the door bracket to the inner door with double-sided tape. I mounted the speaker under the dash and plugged it into an outlet powered by my inverter so AC power is usually present. The security alarm isn’t very loud, but enough to scare a thief.

  2. I’d have no issues spending a little more money for this system’s level of protection. This system would ensure you always have a sense of safety during your trips.
